iOS Remains The Most Popular App Environment (REPORT) - by aby benedict

There has been some hype among Apple watchers as Eric Schmidt recently commented that writing apps for Android 4.0 Ice Cream would be preferred by developers over Apple iOS. Reason was Dollars on Ad for Android. For Google, Android is generating $833 million as Ad revenue a year, out of which two-third is from iOS devices whereas Apple paid after it’s 30% cut $3 billion to developers as of October 2011.
Though Android exceeds in unit sales as compared to iOS and also in number of devices and activation numbers still iOS has proved to be the most important environment in the world and app developers would bet on iOS this holiday season as confirmed by some analytics of Flurry. Data gathered from 135,000 iOS and Android apps using Flurry analytics confirmed that Android developers hardly make a quarter of the earnings of their iOS peers or 24% approx.

A Question arises as to where do other platforms stand? As understood through another report by research firm NPD issued today, almost 80% of the market for smartphones in US through in October 2011 comprises of iOS and Android collectively.
Be cautious while talking about Flurry’s numbers as they show that Flurry Analytics comprise of almost 25% of all apps downloaded from App Store and Android Market that occupies a good share of the market.

Point also to be noted is that remainder of estimation has been done keeping in mind the first third of the month’s data already collected and that does not include paid downloads but only in-app purchases. Keeping that in view, it seems interesting that a part of Android Projects (green) has shown a decline from more than one-third as compared to all new projects in Q1 2011 to one-quarter by the end of the year in spite of the fact that many attractive Android smartphones were made available in the market in 2011.
